Meeting to Discuss Lake’s Water Quality
Anyone interested in weighing in on changes to water-quality standards that will impact the Great Salt Lake is invited to a public meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m., at the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, 168 N. 1950 West, Salt Lake City.
One focus of discussion so far has been selenium's impact on the lake's habitat. Selenium is a naturally occurring mineral, but it can show up in ecosystems at higher levels due to industrial activity. At high enough levels, it can impact the reproductive success of nesting shorebirds. For more information, visit www.waterquality.utah.gov/rules/ rulechange.htm.
