The Intel Foundation today announced a $2 million grant to the University of California in support of California Teach, an initiative to help improve science and math education in the state.
"The average performance of our students in science and mathematics is an alarming problem," said Intel Chairman Craig Barrett. "The issue is one of competitiveness. To remain the world leader in technology with a vibrant and growing economy, we need to substantially upgrade our science and math instruction so our children become the architects of tomorrow's great innovations and technologies. The collaboration between business and government on the California Teach initiative represents a good first step toward improving science and math education."
The University of California initiative, "California Teach, 1000 Teachers, 1 Million Minds," will enhance the supply and preparation of science and mathematics teachers, with a goal of providing 1,000 highly qualified science and math teachers into California public schools each year starting in 2010. To recognize and reward science and mathematics excellence, the company also sponsors two important science competitions: the Intel Science Talent Search and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
The Intel Foundation donation is part of the Intel(R) Innovation in Education initiative, a sustained commitment - in collaboration with educators and government leaders worldwide - to help today's students develop the higher-level thinking skills they need to participate and succeed in a knowledge-based economy.
