Hurricane Gustav Bound for Haiti

Posted on: Tuesday, 26 August 2008, 09:00 CDT

Rapidly strengthening Hurricane Gustav was forecast to hit Haiti Tuesday with winds of at least 85 mph before bearing down on Cuba.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 5 a.m., Gustav was centered about 100 miles south-southeast of Port au Prince, Haiti, and about 300 miles southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba.

The system that developed Monday from a tropical depression to a Category 1 hurricane was moving northwest near 9 mph, which forecasters said would lead it to southwestern Haiti Tuesday afternoon and then eastern Cuba on Wednesday.

Warnings and watches were posted in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Jamaica, the report said.

The seventh named Atlantic tropical system of the season was expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds exceeding 96 mph before hitting Haiti, forecasters said.

Hurricane force winds extend 25 miles from the storm center, while tropical storm force winds extend up to 70 miles, the report said.
