Firefighters Gain Upper Hand in Utah

Posted on: Wednesday, 27 August 2008, 15:00 CDT

Firefighters in Utah said they believe they will be able to soon contain a pair of wildfires burning to the south of the Great Salt Lake.

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity levels took much of the steam out of the Corner Canyon fire near Draper and the Lonesome Pine blaze in Juab County.

Officials told The Salt Lake Tribune they were confident they could complete containment of the fires by Thursday.

A third fire will require more work. The Gate Narrow Fire in Tooele County was 20 percent contained Wednesday morning at around 775 acres; however another 100 acres could go up in smoke by the end of the day, the Tribune said.

A Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman told the newspaper that it might be Sunday before the fire was contained, although no structures were in imminent danger.
