A DOG that sparked a major rescue operation after jumping off a bridge has returned home after treatment for its injuries.

Winnie, a black retriever, was being walked by the road in Warkworth, Northumberland, when she suddenly jumped over the bridge wall and plunged 7.5m (25ft) into the river, landing on rocks below.

Although the two-year-old bitch broke her foot and suffered cuts and bruises, she managed to scramble to a nearby island in the centre of the river.

Firefighters and a vet were called to the scene and a fire crew enlisted the help of a resident with a boat to reach the stricken animal.

Owner Marj Cook said the dog had earlier been swimming and she believed it just wanted another dip.
