Harper Wrong to Fast-Track Tar Sands Development: Layton
Posted on: Monday, 8 September 2008, 12:00 CDT
New Democrat Leader Jack Layton today cited Stephen Harper's fast tracking of approvals for tar sands development as an example of how he can't be trusted to protect the environment.
"As Prime Minister, Mr. Harper puts the interests of his powerful friends in big oil before your families' right to clean air and safe water," said Layton.
"Despite warnings from his own government's agencies, Harper fast tracked Imperial Oil's Kearl tar sands development, north of Fort McMurray, without any conditions to mitigate the significant impacts on the environment and on the health of affected communities like Fort Smith."
Throughout the campaign Layton and his team of New Democrats will announce specific measures to tackle the climate change crisis and protect our environment.
"I'll announce a plan that makes Canada's biggest polluters, including Mr. Harper's friends in big oil pay for the pollution they create," said Layton.
"As Prime Minister I'll set absolute targets for greenhouse gas reductions each and every year, invest in solutions that'll create thousands of sustainable jobs and make environmentally friendly choices more affordable for everyday families."
