South Waterfront in Portland Designated ‘Salmon-Safe’
Ecology group Salmon-Safe, which works to aid in salmon spawning in restored watersheds, has designated South Waterfront as Portland’s first ‘salmon-safe’ neighborhood.
The emerging neighborhood received the designation for its developers’ efforts to protect the nearby Willamette River and its tributaries. South Waterfront developers Gerding Edlen Development and Homer Williams utilized bioswales and other storm-water management techniques during the neighborhood’s development to clean up what was a former industrial area. The South Waterfront has also promised to keep the area free of pesticides that would harm salmon and other aquatic animals.
