Volunteers Get Close to Nature
By JOHN WARE
Volunteers turned out to help with the habitat management at the renowned Dawlish Warren nature reserve.
They spent the day clearing reeds, small trees and other invasive plants, to maintain the wildlife value around the main pond.
Jenny Lockett, the Exe estuary officer, said: “As well as being fun, it was also a great way to get close up views of dragonflies, damselflies and some rare species of bird.”
The clear-up was organised by the Exe partnership in conjunction with Teignbridge Council rangers, and Cllr Margaret Rogers, chairman of the partnership, added: “We are extremely grateful for the support of volunteers who have helped with other projects along the Exe estuary. It gives local communities the opportunity to be part of the practical management of the estuary, and to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, while being active and making new friends.”
Dawlish Warren is a high designated national nature reserve due to its importance as a bird roosting site for waders who use the estuary, the vulnerable sand dunes and grassland, as well as the large number of different species it supports.
