Hands-on Approach to Art at Museum

September 14, 2008

A new city mobile exhibition is being created which will feature a variety of interactive resources for visually impaired people.

Staff from the learning team at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery have been developing exhibits for the forthcoming project, entitled Feeling is Believing.

They have created ‘tactile’ interpretations of six key paintings from the museum and art gallery’s collections.

The works will form the basis for a small mobile exhibition and a ‘unit’ of work for the team to use in the future. One of the paintings chosen for the project is A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach by Stanhope Forbes.

The painting is one of the museum’s most admired artworks and is the main focus of its current exhibition, A Fish Sale… Explored which is on display until November 1.

The voiceover for the audio guide which will accompany the tactile interpretation of the painting has been recorded by BBC Radio Devon broadcaster Gordon Sparks.
