Hurricane Fells Historic Buckeye
City officials in North Bend, Ohio, say Hurricane Ike ravaged one of the state’s oldest and largest Buckeye trees.
The 88-foot yellow buckeye lost everything but one limb and part of its trunk in high winds Sunday, North Bend Mayor Terry Simpson told The Cincinnati Enquirer.
“It’s a sad thing. It was pretty well destroyed,” said Simpson, noting people were taking their children to see what was left of the old tree, the Enquirer reported Tuesday.
The tree, which bore the plaque “State Champion Buckeye,” is located at the entrance to the Aston Oaks golf course, once part of U.S. President William Henry Harrison’s estate, the Enquirer.
