Jam Factory Evacuated

MORE than 40 workers at a jam factory needed treatment yesterday after a chemical spill.

Twelve people were taken to hospital and 39 were treated by paramedics after the acid spill at Wilkin & Sons in Tiptree, Essex.

Ambulance crews said most victims suffered breathing problems. Firefighters said more than 160 people were evacuated just before 3pm.

A fire brigade spokesman said chlorine gas was created after sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid were mixed.
