Grant to Help Provide ESL, GED Training
ELLSWORTH – The Washington County committee of the Maine Community Foundation recently awarded $30,993 in grants to nonprofits, including Mano en Mano-Hand in Hand of Milbridge. The money will be used to pay for English as a Second Language classes and GED preparation for Hispanic residents.
Other grants recipients were:
. Cobscook Community Learning Center, Trescott, for a set of table looms.
. Elm Street School, East Machias, to build an outdoor playground for students, families, and the community.
. Great Auk Land Trust, Milbridge, to provide professional facilitation and support for discussions between regional land trusts.
. Island Astronomy Institute, Bernard, to plan and develop a regional portable planetarium outreach program.
. Literacy Volunteers of Washington County, Machias, to deliver free tutor training to volunteers, hold how-to workshops, and host an “Imagination Library” Festival.
. Sunrise County Economic Council, Machias, for an overnight alumni retreat at the Greenland Point Center.
. The Greenland Point Center, Princeton, to expand available parking and construct a maintenance facility.
. University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Orono, to document the impact of the Down East Micro Enterprise Network in Washington and Hancock counties.
. Washington Hancock Community Agency, Ellsworth, for the Down East Business Alliance to help the managers of the Ellsworth and Machias Valley farmers markets prepare for the 2009 selling season.
