Assailant Breaks Wings of 11 Pelicans
A California wildlife center offered a $5,000 reward Friday for information leading to the arrest of the person who broke the wings of 11 pelicans.
The birds were found this week at Bolsa Chica State Park near Los Angeles, the Orange County Register reported. Seven were dead when discovered, while three were so badly injured that they were put down.
The one survivor is being cared for at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach, which offered the reward.
Debbie McGuire, the center's wildlife director, said that the wings were clearly broken intentionally by the same person.
"Whoever injured the animals did definitely break the wings in the same type of way," McGuire said. "We would hope that whoever is doing it is done, but it's hard to say."
The case is being investigated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
