LITTER-PICKERS made a clean sweep at a beach.

Volunteers picked rubbish from Tynemouth Longsands as part of the international Marine Conservation Society Beach-watch event.

The Overseas Ship holding Group organised the tidy-up with the Blue Reef Aquarium.

Cullercoats Brownies and the Eco Club from Christ Church Primary School in North Shields also took part.

The items of rubbish were collected and recorded as part of a survey to build up a picture of the types of waste found on our shores.

Last year almost 4,000 Beach watch volunteers removed more than 346,000 litter items from 354 beaches around the UK.

The global effort last year saw more than 378,000 volunteers attending worldwide coastlines cleaning waste and debris.

The total waste collected was more than six million pieces of debris. More than 500,000 volunteers worldwide were expected to take part in 2008. More information can be found at www.mcsuk.org.
