The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources awarded $1 million in grants for restoring trails and bridges in Pittsburgh’s four major parks, planting thousands of trees and adding to the bike trail connecting Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.

The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy will get $250,000 to restore trails and improve signs in Frick, Highland, Schenley and Riverview Parks. Another $250,000 will go to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s “Treevitalize” program aimed at planting 20,000 new trees around the city in five years. The final $500,000 goes to the Regional Trail Corp. to help build a bridge to take the Great Allegheny Passage trail over a rail line in Duquesne.

DCNR Secretary Michael DiBerardinis said the awards fit the spirit of the International Urban Parks Conference taking place in the city this week.
