Metropolitan to Hold Latest Public Forum on Southern California's Water Future, in Face of Supply Challenges
Posted on: Tuesday, 23 September 2008, 21:00 CDT
MWD:
WHAT: The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California will hold the latest in a series of four public forums as the district begins updating its region-wide water resources plan. The updated plan will provide a roadmap for maintaining the Southland's supply reliability over the next two decades. Through the forums, Metropolitan and its 26 member public agencies are looking to engage and seek input from local water agencies, government, business and environmental communities and other stakeholders. The input will help Metropolitan determine the right mix of imported deliveries and continued investment in water conservation, recycling, groundwater cleanup and ocean water desalination to meet future demands. This will lead to fundamental changes in the way water supply and reliability are met. WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WHERE: Metropolitan Water District headquarters, 700 N. Alameda St., adjacent to historic Union Station, downtown Los Angeles (Los Angeles County Thomas Guide page 634, G/H-3)
BACKGROUND:
Since 1996, Metropolitan and its member agencies have periodically updated the region's long-term water strategies through MWD's Integrated Resources Plan, which served as a national blueprint for regional supply diversification. Record drought, climate change and environmental concerns have limited supplies imported this year from the Colorado River and Northern California. Faced with these challenges, Metropolitan is updating its IRP to outline a strategy for water reliability through the year 2030.
The Los Angeles event will mark the third of four forums Metropolitan is holding. The fourth final forum will be held in San Diego in October.
