Bacteria Found in Downey’s Water Supply

September 26, 2008

DOWNEY – City officials are warning residents to boil their tap water at least through Saturday after they found Coliform bacteria in the water supply in three different locations.

Officials say the bacteria is generally not harmful but can indicate the presence of other potentially harmful bacteria.

According to the city’s Web site, officials found the Coliform bacteria during routine weekly testing of the city’s water supply, which is conducted in 25 different places.

The city says it’s working closely with the health department to flush out the contaminated water through fire hydrants in the affected areas, and chlorine is being added to disinfect the pipelines.

More tests will be done on a daily basis until the water is safe to drink again, officials said.

Until then, residents should boil all tap water for at least one minute to kill the bacteria.
