Singapore population grows 5.5 pct to 4.84 mln

SINGAPORE, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's population grew 5.5 percent to 4.84 million in June this year from a year ago, latest statistics showed on Friday.

The number was boosted by an increasing number of foreigners in Singapore. Statistics showed that the number of non-residents, which accounts for 25 percent of total population, grew 19 percent from 1 million to 1.2 million this year.

Singapore resident population, including citizens and permanent residents, went up by 1.7 percent to 3.64 million from a year ago.

The number of citizens grew to 3.16 million from 3.13 million last year due to the higher number of citizen babies and more permanent residents taking up citizenship.

Figures also showed that there were some 18,032 residents births in the first half of this year compared to just 17,325 the same period last year.

The city-state has one of the world's lowest fertility rate -- 1.29 in 2007.
