Edible Plant Walk Set on Sears Island
SEARSPORT – The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition will celebrate the autumn season with an Edible-Medicinal Plant Walk 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 4, on Sears Island.
Lao Gillam will lead this third and last walk in the coalition’s series of Sears Island plant walks. During the morning, participants will learn how to stave off or treat colds and-or flu using herbs. Gillam also will discuss recipes with elderberries, acorns and cattails as ingredients; and he’ll point out other utilitarian plants. Participants also will be treated to lovely fall views of the Penobscot Bay area.
Those wishing to take part should meet at the end of the causeway off Route 1 at 9 a.m. Participants are advised to bring wind and rain gear, water and a snack. Participants could also bring a notebook, a pencil or pen and a camera, but are asked to leave their pets at home.
The 69,657 acres of Belfast Bay Watershed is comprised of four smaller watersheds: the Little River, the Passagassawakeag River, the Wescott Stream and the Goose River. It includes part or all of the towns of Brooks, Frankfort, Knox, Morrill, Northport, Searsport, Swanville and Waldo as well as the city of Belfast.
