Fire Closes Major Norwegian Rail Line

The Bergen-Oslo rail line, one of the highest in the world, was shut down Thursday by a fire in a structure designed to keep snow off the track, officials said.
Officials were unsure when service would resume, Aftenposten reported. The Norwegian rail company was working on alternate bus service for passengers but said no alternative could be found for the seven daily freight trains.
The blaze was reported around noon in a 1,200-foot structure placed over the tracks near Hallingskeid. The fire brought down electric power lines.
Helicopters made water drops on the fire.
The rail line, built in the late 19th century, crosses the Hardangervidda, a high plateau, and reaches a height of more than 4,000 feet above sea level.
