U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: Gustav Caused 33 Oil Spills
Hurricane Gustav resulted in at least 33 oil spills, ranging from simple sheens to 8,000-gallon spills, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said today.
Most of the oil spills were sheens, not slicks, so were of minimal wildlife concern, the agency said.
Although not as severe an impact as the 8 million gallons of oil spilled during hurricanes Katrina and Rita, one of the spills related to Gustav coated brown pelicans; that spill, which occurred 25 miles northwest of Breton National Wildlife Refuge and amounted to 20 barrels of oil, oiled about 20 brown pelicans, 10 of them severely, the agency said.
