City to consider land-use ban
WALNUT - The City Council will discuss tonight placing a temporary ban on certain land uses in response to an NFL stadium proposed for neighboring Industry.
Officials said consideration of a moratorium is in response to community concern over effects from the stadium "spilling over" into Walnut.
The ban will include nightclubs, liquor stores, hotels and street widening projects, officials said.
Environmental group to sue EPA
The environmental group Earthjustice are threatening to sue the EPA if it finalizes its decision not to regulate perchlorate contamination in drinking water.
The EPA confirmed last week earlier news reports that it will not set a drinking water safety standard for perchlorate, a chemical in rocket fuel and fireworks that has been found in San Gabriel Valley groundwater.
The agency determined that in 99 percent of public drinking water systems, perchlorate was "not at levels of public concern."
The EPA deferred perchlorate regulation to states. California and Massachusetts are the only two states that require the removal of the chemical from water.
The EPA's decision is preliminary. The agency will make a final ruling in December after reviewing comments.
