Two Charged for Illegal Fishing
TWO fishermen were arrested on suspicion of casting illegal nets.
A crackdown on poaching has seen the Environment Agency step up its patrols on the River Wear in a bid to protect migrating salmon and sea trout.
As part of the operation, Environment Agency fisheries enforcement officers arrested two men in the Port of Sunderland on Thursday night.
Team leader Kevin Summerson, said: “The Environment Agency has worked closely with local government bodies and local police officers to combat illegal fishing activity.
“Two men were arrested late last week, charged with allegedly setting an illegal fishing net.
“They have been released on police bail.
“Salmon and sea trout fishing provides a valuable contribution to the regional economy.”
