$5M Gift Clouds Chemical Probe

A University of Michigan scientist's investigation of the chemical bisphenol A is being questioned because of a $5 million donation to his research center.
Martin Philbert, who is heading up a Food and Drug Administration panel delving into the chemical's safety, contends his ongoing inquiry was not tainted by the big gift the university's Risk Science Center received from a retired medical supply manufacturer who says the use of bisphenol A poses no health threat, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Sunday.
The Journal-Sentinel revealed the retired executive, Charles Gelman, supports the use of bisphenol A and was allegedly once the state's second worst polluter.
But Philbert assured concerned parties in an e-mail that despite the generous donation to the university center he founded, he remained objective while heading up the federal probe.
"At no time have the Gelman family or any other interested/disinterested person, persons, corporations or other entity contacted me or attempted to influence my scientific judgment on the matter," he said.
The newspaper said the panel's verdict on the chemical's safety is expected soon.
