Dorothy Young Receives the 2nd Annual Humana Starlight Award, Honoring Senior Citizen Volunteers in Salt Lake County

Posted on: Thursday, 23 October 2008, 18:00 CDT

Dorothy Young has been selected as the recipient of the second annual Humana Starlight Award honoring the efforts of senior citizens who volunteer in Salt Lake County. In recognition of her service, Humana (NYSE: HUM) awarded a $10,000 grant to the Senior Companion Program, the nonprofit organization of Young's choosing.

Young has served as a Senior Companion Program volunteer with Salt Lake County Aging Services for the past 21 years. Senior Companions serve up to 20 hours each week assisting frail and isolated seniors in Salt Lake County. Volunteers serve in the homes of the individuals needing assistance and help with tasks of daily living, including light housekeeping, grocery shopping, meal preparation, socialization, transportation to essential appointments and limited personal care. Companions also provide respite care to families caring for a loved one at home. Over those 21 years of service in the Senior Companion Program, Young has provided in excess of 21,000 hours of service.

"Dorothy is one of the most caring and giving people I have ever met and had the opportunity to work with in my career," said Dwight Rasmussen, who has been the manager of the Senior Companion Program in Salt Lake County Aging Services for the 21 years that Young has been a volunteer. "Without even knowing it, she has served as a role model for new volunteers and inspired them to help others in their service as a volunteer."

"Dorothy truly exemplifies the agency's mission of fostering independence for Salt Lake County's older generations by offering advocacy resources and volunteer opportunities," he added.

The Starlight Award was created to honor an exceptional senior citizen volunteer, as well as to provide financial support for a nonprofit organization whose good work benefits the community. Nonprofit organizations from throughout Salt Lake County nominated their top senior citizen volunteers for the award, and nominees were evaluated on the dedication and leadership they demonstrated, as well as the impact their volunteer efforts had on others in the community.

"Dorothy is a very deserving recipient for the Humana Starlight Award," said Ed DeVincentis, sales director for Humana MarketPOINT in Utah and Idaho. "Her dedication and compassion for helping others is exactly what we need more of in our community and recognition of this is why this award was created. We are excited to present it to someone as deserving as Dorothy."

The Humana Starlight Award was presented at a special recognition ceremony on Oct. 23 at the Grand America Hotel. A panel of local judges evaluated the applications and chose the award recipient. Judges included DeVincentis; Jim Boylen, head men's basketball coach at the University of Utah; Earl Hurst, president of Commercial Products for Humana of Utah, Nancy Workman, president and chief executive officer of the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce; and Doug Clark, managing director of the Business Growth Program, Governor's Office of Economic Development.
