Hartford Boasts 650 More People; City Has Largest Growth Out of Two Counties

The City of Hartford gained 650 people between mid-2003 and mid- 2004, the most of any municipality in Washington and Ozaukee counties, new U.S. Census Bureau population estimates show.
The Washington County city's population now stands at 12,511, according to the estimates, a gain of 1,616 people since the 2000 Census.
Mequon grew by 311 people, the largest gain by Ozaukee County municipalities and the second-largest growth among the two counties.
Mequon's population is 23,793, the mid-2004 estimates show, up from 21,823 in 2000.
West Bend, meanwhile, remains the most populous municipality in the two counties. Its population grew by 250 people, to 29,302. In 2000, the city's population was 28,152.
In Washington County, six municipalities gained 100 or more people; in Ozaukee County, four posted gains of 100 or more.
Hartford Mayor Scott Henke said he isn't surprised by the city's growth. Each year, about 300 new houses are built in the city.
"We've always made our housing affordable, and with industries, we stress we have people living where they work," Henke said.
The city's population growth shows Hartford is a "great place to live, work and play," he said.
Mequon Mayor Christine Nuernberg said Mequon's population gain reflects the city's policy of growing "very slowly." The population gain, although the most in the county, reflects about a 1% growth in the city's total population.
"People move to Mequon because it is a beautiful community with good schools. For most people, their home is their biggest asset, and they have confidence that their asset will increase in value because of the high quality of life in this community," Nuernberg said.
In Ozaukee County, the Village of Grafton grew by 215 people, rising to 11,588.
