Turning A Declining Oil Field Into A Gas Field With Associated Oil

Posted on: Friday, 1 July 2005, 03:00 CDT

The Statfjord Field in the North Sea is a declining oil field with associated gas, but a late life project by Statoil will convert it to a gas field with associated oil. The Statfjord late life project is intended to improve recovery from the Statoil-operated field and keep it on stream until 2018-20.

To achieve this, an extensive well program will be undertaken along with modifications to the platforms. The project also calls for the construction of a new gas export facility to the UK. A 23.1- km pipeline, called the Tampen Link, will be laid from the Statfjord B platform to the Flags transport system, which runs from Britain's Brent field near Statfjord to St. Fergus in Scotland.

Gas from the UK share of Statfjord is already piped to land through Flags via the Northern Leg Gas Pipeline. Modifications made in the late life project will also tie the new pipeline into existing pipelines on Statfjord, such as those from Gullfaks and the Gassled transport system. This will increase export capacity for Statoil gas from other fields on the Norwegian shelf.

The Tanpen Link pipeline is due to be laid in 2006 and be ready for gas export on Oct. 1, 2007
