Volvo Aims to Put the Brakes on Allergies ; Motors

SWEDISH car company Volvo reckons that its anti-hay fever measures are not to be sneezed at.
It follows increasing concerns that hot summer temperatures turn the air inside some vehicles into an unpleasant cocktail of chemicals and pollutants generated by the materials and glues used.
Add to this the seasonal dose of pollen and even a short journey can leave drivers feeling unwell and unable to concentrate properly.
Volvo says it overcomes the problems with its Clean Inside and Out concept that combines electronic climate control with an effective air quality system and pollen filter.
The interiors also comply with the international ecological certification to create an allergy-free interior, geared especially towards sufferers of asthma and hay fever and those with contact allergies such as eczema.
A special chromium-free tanning process has been used for the leather.
Using natural plant substances, it eliminates hexavalent chromium, which together with nickel in buttons and controls can also cause allergies.
In addition to electronic climate control and a pollen filter, all models except the ageing C70 convertible also have the interior air quality system.
This uses electronic sensors to monitor the amount of pollutants in the incoming air and automatically closes the air inlets when levels rise too high when driving in city traffic or through tunnels, for example.
There is also a combined filter with active carbon to eliminate odour surges and lower the levels of nitrogen dioxides, ground- level ozone and hydrocarbons.
Finally there is PremAir, which automatically cleans the air passing through the radiator to convert up to three quarters of ground level ozone, created by mixing nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and sunshine, into pure oxygen. The alternative is to stayindoors all summer.
