Japan to Provide Chinese Steel Groups With Environment-Friendly Technology

Beijing, 4 July: Japanese and Chinese steel associations agreed Monday [4 July] to boost exchanges of environment protection expertise, with Japan pledging to provide Chinese companies with environment-conserving technology.

The Japan Iron and Steel Federation and the China Iron&Steel Association exchanged a memorandum on the bolstering of ties on the first day of a two-day meeting, attended by about 200 representatives of companies, academia and the two governments.

"The issue of environment is not something that only concerns China; it is also an issue that involves Japan," Akira Mimura, president of Nippon Steel Corp. and head of the Japanese association, told reporters.

"We will provide (environment-conserving technology) as much as possible," Mimura said, adding it will be conducted both on a commercial basis and as assistance free of charge.

Steel and iron industries are energy-consuming industries that emit carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases scientists say induces global warming.

Currently, Chinese companies on average need 1.5 times more energy to make 1 ton of steel products from raw materials than do Japanese companies, according to Japanese association officials.

Japanese participants in the conference said China was well aware that it has a long way to go to make its steel industries more efficient and environmentally friendly.

"Both the private-and public-sector participants of the Chinese side mentioned the phrase 'sustainable development' many times during the conference," said Hiroshi Tomono, head of Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd.

"From the Japanese side, we presented our experiences, and I expect collaboration between the two sides to make progress" against this background, Tomono said.
