The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says Frito-Lay Inc. and Kraft Foods Inc. are recalling pistachio nut products due to possible salmonella contamination.
Frito-Lay announced the recall of 1.75-ounce Frito-Lay-brand in-shell salted pistachios with sell-by dates between 14-Jul-09
and 29-Dec-09.
The date is printed on the front of each package.
The product was distributed to retail stores in the United States and Canada. Consumers with questions can contact Frito-Lay at 800-352-4477.
The FDA said Kraft is recalling Planters- and Back to Nature-brand products containing pistachio nuts, including Planters dry roasted pistachios, nut-rition
heart healthy mix, pecan lovers mix and trail mix. Back to Nature recalls include pistachio mix and Nantucket blend. The products were distributed nationwide.
Consumers with questions can contact Kraft at 866-538-8280.
The Kroger Co. last week recalled its Private Selection-brand of shelled pistachios also because of possible salmonella contamination.
All three companies said their pistachios were supplied by Setton Farms, which has recalled about 1 million pounds of possibly tainted pistachios from its 2008 crop year.
FDA officials said salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, with symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, salmonella can produce more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
