Tanzania's coal deposits 2 billion tons: minister

DAR ES SALAAM, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The Tanzanian minister for energy and minerals has told the country's lawmakers that there are 2 billion tons of coal deposits in southern Tanzania.

The coal deposits are located mainly in the Mchuchuma Katewaka area of the Iringa region and in the Songwe-Kiwira area of the Mbeya region, Minister Daniel Yona was quoted Wednesday by local media as saying.

Tanzania has 26 province-like administrative regions in all.

The Mchuchuma deposit alone is estimated to have 125 million tons of coal, according to reports reaching here from Dodoma where the parliament is currently in session.

Minister Daniel Yona said that 30 million tons of Mchuchuma coal could generate 400 megawatts of electricity for 20 years to come.

But the country currently lacks large-scale mining equipment and coal-fired generators, according to the official.

Tanzania gets most of its electricity from the country's rich hydraulic resources that scatter around the country.

Yet due to the inconvenience to transmit electricity to population centers, the east African country is resorting to natural gas-fired generators to provide electricity in metropolis like Dar es Salaam.
