The Best of European Biotech Research Meet in Saxony

Posted on: Thursday, 11 September 2003, 06:00 CDT

DRESDEN, Germany, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- This year the European Life Scientist Organization (ELSO) and the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM) are hosting a joint annual meeting from 20 - 24 September in Dresden, and the first time the event is taking place in Saxony. More than 2,000 international scientists will meet in Dresden. The list of participants includes the Nobel Prize Laureate for Medicine 2002, Sydney Brenner from La Jolla; Ian Wilmut, Edinburgh, known for his work with the sheep Dolly; the Nobel Prize Laureate for Chemistry 1988, Harmut Michel; and Nobel Prize Laureate for medicine 1999, Gunter Blobel from New York. Leading local scientists will also make significant contributions to the meeting, e.g. Jonathan Howard, Andrej Shevchenko and Marino Zerial from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden.

Kai Simons, ELSO President and Director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden: "The Life Sciences are now standing at the threshold of the post genomic period, the boundaries between the disciplines will disappear. We must bring together researches and scientists from various disciplines if we want to concentrate their knowledge and make it useful. The ELSO organizes its annual meeting for exactly this purpose."

An important aim of the meeting is to promote scientific cooperation in the Life Sciences. Equally encouraged is the public acceptance for new developments in research. ELSO 2003 therefore also presents itself as a forum for discussing the socio-political effects of this science and as a research lobbyist at the European level. The ELSO 2003 is being hosted together with the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM), which, with around 5,500 members, is the largest biological sciences society in Germany. An extensive accompanying program, including an exhibition and open lectures, will build a bridge to the general public.

On 19. 09. at 10.00 a.m. an opening press conference will take place in Dresden. A scientific press conference is scheduled on 20. 09. at 3:00 p.m. The program and accreditation can be requested from elso2003.presse@gmx.de.
