Lake Michigan recovering from 2008 decline

Posted on: Monday, 27 April 2009, 12:19 CDT

Lake Michigan water levels, which dropped to near-record lows in 2008, are up this year because of wetter weather, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.

The corps said that compared with April 2008 numbers, Lake Michigan water levels have increased by nearly 9 inches, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Sunday.

Figures indicate that compared with January 2008, when the lake was at a near-record low, levels have increased by more than 2 feet.

Corps meteorologist Keith Kompoltowicz, who is stationed in Detroit, told the newspaper the lake's water levels should remain at least 9 inches above 2008 totals for the entire summer.
