Onshore Wind Farm Ahead Of Schedule

ScottishPower said on Monday, that its Whitelee wind farm near Glasgow is on track to be completed ahead of schedule in the next few weeks.

All of the 140 turbines at the farm will be ready soon, ScottishPower said, pushing its capacity to 322 megawatts, which is enough to power over 180,000 homes.  This would make it Europe's largest onshore wind farm.

The company began working on the project 10 years ago, and in 2006 received a planning consent award.  In January last year, the farm's first turbines started generating power.  It covers an area of 21.2 square miles, and 602 miles of cable has been laid.

Scottishpower, a unit of Spain's Iberdrola, has applied to extend the farm's turbines by 36, bringing 452 more megawatts of power, the company said.
