Floating barriers have been put in place as a means to protect pollution damage from oil tanker spills. Members of the Indian Ocean Commissin (COI) have begun their work which is aimed at protecting marine ecosystems.
In this regard, a regional project coordination centre for the fight against oil spills in the member islands and countries, has been set up at Ambatobe in Madagascar.
The centre was inaugurated yesterday by Charles Sylvain Rabotoarison, Minister for the Environment, Water and Forests, and by Raj Prayag, former regional co-coordinator of the project to fight against oil spills at sea.
As its name indicates, this centre coordinates the initiatives led by each country at regional level. "The target is to protect the marine environment ecosystems and coasts in the sub region, to assist member countries to conform to the international convention on the prevention, the fight, and cooperation against pollution caused by oil tanker spills as per the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation, 1990 Convention, which demands member countries to develop, prepare and maintain an organization adapted to respond to crisis and emergency oil spill pollution", said Raj Praya.
