Forest Service Ends Fees for Recreational Areas

Posted on: Friday, 8 July 2005, 21:00 CDT

The U.S. Forest Service stopped charging fees on nine recreation sites in New Mexico, including two in the Santa Fe National Forest, over the weekend.

User fees have been removed at the Iron Gate and Black Canyon trailheads in Santa Fe National Forest, along with seven trailheads in the Cibola National Forest.

The Forest Service removed fees from the trailheads because they didn't meet the requirements set for trailheads, campgrounds and other sites under the 2004 Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. The act allows federal agencies to charge fees if sites have features such as permanent toilets, trash bins, picnic tables and security services, according to a news release from the Forest Service.

"These sites may be returned to the fee program at some time in the future if public use results in a need to further develop them and add improvements," regional forester Harv Forsgren said.

Jeff Saari, a recreation specialist with the regional office, said, "Most of the fee sites in the region still meet the recreational-enhancement act requirements."

The fees charged at the trailheads were $2 per vehicle per day in the Santa Fe National Forest and $3 per day in the Cibola National Forest.

The federal law also allows the Forest Service to charge fees in areas of high recreation use. High impact fees were being charged for the entire Sandia Mountains area, but after the analysis, Cibola National Forest officials will now charge fees only in the Sandia Crest National Scenic Byway corridor along N.M. 14 from Cedar Crest, and on national forest lands in the Juan Tabo Basin along the west face of the Sandias closest to Albuquerque, Saari said.

Four fee campgrounds are temporarily closed for construction and rehabilitation. Two of the campgrounds -- Black Canyon and Paliza campgrounds are in the Santa Fe National Forest.
