Hospital apologizes for surgical mistake

The head of Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I., says he is sorry one of his surgeons operated on the wrong part of a patient's mouth.

Hospital President Dr. Timothy J. Babineau said the surgical accident at Hasbro Children's Hospital, which is part of Rhode Island Hospital, was noticed mid-surgery and the proper procedure was then onducted, the Providence (R.I.) Journal said Thursday.

The patient is in good condition and we do not anticipate any further complications related to this error, Babineau said in a statement.

The mistake during the cleft palate surgery Monday prompted a preliminary investigation that found the unidentified surgeon and the surgical team likely failed to follow all of the hospital's standard policies, Babineau said.

Both surgeon and team have been placed on administrative leave as state Health Department inspectors investigate the incident.
