Pakistani Government Commited to Population Control, Says Minister

Islamabad, 11 July: Federal Minister for Population Welfare, Chaudhry Shahbaz Hussain Monday [11 July] said that the government has a strong political commitment to control the menace of population growth and provide better living opportunities to masses.
Speaking in a PTV programme "News Morning", he said, "The government is alive to the problem of population growth and giving high priority to address the issue".
The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to the realization of the goals laid down in the policies.
He said, the high population growth has serious implications on the provision of health care services, food, education facilities, shelter, employment and other basic amenities of life.
The minister said, the government has organized special seminars, documentary programmes and programmes at capital, provincial, district and tehsil levels to bring awareness among the masses and mark the day.
This year, he said, United Nations' slogan for the World Population Day is 'equality', which urged the need to provide equal opportunities to both genders.
To a question he said, the government is committed to bridge the gap between resources and population adding to meet the challenge all resources will be utilized".
He said, we should educate the masses that a small family could prosper better, adding "It is the era of specialization and a child can do something which a 11-member team cannot do".
The minister said, the government has decided to start a three- year special programme for the training of Ulema.
Under the programme, he said, 13,000 Ulema will be imparted training in population planning, so that they could create awareness among masses. Monthly stipend will be given to trained Ulema, he added.
He warned that if the current growth rate is not contained then Pakistan's population will cross the figure of 300 million in the next 37 years.
To a question he said, the desired economic development was not possible without controlling population growth rate.
