Pentadyne's Flywheel Energy Storage Enhances Performance of 100 kVA to 500 kVA Medical-Grade Power Systems

Pentadyne Power Corporation and Mission Critical Power Solutions (MCPS) today unveiled an innovative Medical-Grade Power System designed for high peak-power diagnostic equipment. The new system combines the MCPS MedAC(TM) uninterruptible power system (UPS) with Pentadyne's Voltage Support Solution(TM) (VSS 120) flywheel energy storage system. The new system is designed to deliver premium-grade power for CT scanners, linear accelerators and MRIs, as well as radiography, mammography and angiography equipment.
MCPS's MedAC is the only 3 Phase UPS listed under the UL 544 medical device safety standard and Pentadyne's VSS 120 is a one-of-a-kind flywheel system that replaces the valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries typically used in this application. The MedAC and VSS 120 components of the Medical-Grade Power System are each housed in small-footprint cabinets that render special installation and air conditioning unnecessary while saving valuable floor space. The VSS 120 also eliminates the environmental and cost concerns associated with maintaining and replacing toxic lead-acid batteries.
Frank DeLatttre, Pentadyne's senior vice president sales, said, "The Pentadyne VSS 120 is the ideal energy storage device for hospital applications. It can sustain loads up to 160 kW for up to 12 seconds -- more time than required for backup generators to take over in the event of an outage."
Wayne Wright, president of MCPS, added, "The MedAC UPS is designed to handle the peak current loads typical of high-end diagnostic equipment, and the VSS 120 is a perfect energy source for handling everything from voltage sags to outages without the problems and maintenance headaches associated with VRLA batteries. Combining these two products results in a robust system that meets the high reliability requirements necessary in medical environments."
The MedAC product line is available with ratings from 100 kVA to 500 kVA. In addition to being the only 3 Phase UPS with UL 544 listing, it also is listed under UL 1778 and UL 60601-1 (pending).
Pentadyne's flywheel power system provides a stable, reliable, low-maintenance, extended-life DC voltage source for UPS systems. The VSS 120 can completely eliminate the need for batteries in UPS applications by providing sufficient ride-through for short duration outages or until a standby engine-generator can come on line. When connected to most UPS models, a single model VSS 120 provides sufficient energy to support loads up to 225 kVA, depending on the back-up time required. Multiple VSS units in parallel provide economic ride-through for power levels up to 2 MW.
Both the MedAC UPS and the VSS 120 flywheel energy storage system are offered with a five-year warranty.
