Proposal to Drill Gas Wells Protested

Posted on: Monday, 11 July 2005, 21:00 CDT

Jul. 10--KELLER - A plan to extract natural gas from beneath Keller High School and First United Methodist Church has some residents protesting.

Deb Reed said she and others will attend Monday night's Planning and Zoning Commission meeting to object to the rezoning of about 82 vacant acres. The commission meets at 7 p.m. at Keller Town Hall, 1100 Bear Creek Parkway.

The city allows drilling in planned development zones, said Nika Reinecke, director of community development. The land at Bancroft and Pate Orr roads is zoned for single-family homes and is near the school and church.

If the commission approves the change, the City Council will address the issue in August.

EnCana Oil and Gas initially asked for two 3-acre drilling sites, both within 25 feet of homes. A new proposal, crafted after company officials met with residents, shows one drilling site farther from homes.

The school district, which would receive royalties for extracted minerals, is not taking a position, Superintendent James Veitenheimer said.
