Austrian Plant Converts Wood Into Gas

An Austrian plant that converts wood into gas opened on Wednesday, promising new options in renewable energy, the AFP reported.
The gas produced at the facility is suitable for use in urban heating systems, gas powered cars or by power stations that operate on gas, investors on the project said.
"We still need fossil fuel of course, but this plant shows what is technically possible," Austria's Environment Minister Nikolas Berlakovich said at the plant's inauguration.
The plant, situated in the Austrian town of Guessing, a place known for being completely energy independent, can produce 5,297.2 cubic feet of bio-gas per hour, which is plenty to heat 150 homes on a frigid winter’s day.
"The gas produced has the same quality as natural gas," said Richard Zweiler, from the European Center for Renewable Energy (EEE), which is behind the venture.
The plant required three years to transition from the pilot stage to the industrial stage. Funding for the project totaled 11 million dollars and was provided by the European Union, Switzerland and Austria.
Martin Kaltschmitt, head of the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ) said the Guessing plant was a model by which would be mimicked "in Germany and Sweden, and on a larger scale."
In Goteborg, Sweden, a project is underway to build a plant capable of producing between 20 and 25 megawatts of power – about 25 times bigger than the Guessing project.
