Vietnam sees beer production boom
HANOI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's beer plants now have combined annual capacity of nearly 1.5 billion liters, while the plan on developing the local alcohol, beer and beverage industry approved by the government in 2002 aims to turn out only 1.2 billion liters in 2005 and 1.5 billion liters in 2010.
As a result, Vietnam's Industry Ministry has recently submitted a new plan to the government for approval, under which new large- scale beer, alcohol and beverage plants will be built and major existing ones will be expanded in the next 5 years with estimated investment of 14.3 trillion Vietnamese dong (905 million US dollars), the ministry said Monday.
Under the new development plan, all economic sectors will be allowed to freely engage in making beer, alcohol and beverages. Preferential treatment will be given to production of beverages from locally-grown fruits.
Vietnam, with current population of over 82 million, will produce 2.5 billion liters of beer and 1.5 billion liters of beverages in 2010, the ministry predicted, noting that the country made beer output of 593.6 million liters in the first half of this year, up 9.1 percent against the same period last year.
