JBS Swift Beef Co. recall is expanded

The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the expansion of a June 24 recall of assorted Swift-brand beef products.

The FSIS said the JBS Swift Beef Co. of Greeley, Colo., is voluntarily expanding the recall from 41,280 pounds of its beef products to approximately 380,000 pounds that might be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

The FSIS said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported its investigation into 24 illnesses in multiple states suggests at least 18 cases appear to be associated with the recalled beef.

The recalled Swift-brand beef products, produced April 21 and distributed both nationally and internationally, include intact cuts of beef or boxed beef typically used for steaks and roasts rather than ground beef.

E. coli O157:H7 H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
