California Orders Whole Foods to Pull Ice Cream After Bacteria Found

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 July 2005, 00:00 CDT

Jul. 13--The California Department of Food and Agriculture ordered that Lapperts banana caramel chocolate chip ice cream be pulled Tuesday from shelves of Whole Foods stores across Northern California, including the Sacramento area.

The CDFA also ordered the product to be held at the company's Richmond manufacturing plant.

Inspectors in Washington State found Listeria monocytogenes bacteria during routine surveillance of the product and laboratory sampling, but no illnesses have been reported, CDFA officials said.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause a sometimes-fatal medical condition known as listeriosis among pregnant women, newborns and older adults with symptoms that include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea.

Customers who purchased the product in one-pint containers should discard it or return it to the store for refunds, CDFA officials said.
