Supercomputer called fastest of its kind
July 23, 2009
A supercomputer that just started operating at the University of Florida is likely the fastest of its kind, its designer says.
The Novo-G is a reconfigurable
computer, meaning it can rearrange its internal circuitry to suit the task at hand.
Traditional computers use so-called fixed-logic devices
to perform tasks.
The Novo-G can be used in applications from space satellites to research supercomputers, said Alan George, director of the UF National Science Foundation Center for High-Performance Reconfigurable Computing.
The Novo-G can be 10 times to 100 times faster than other computers its size while using up to 10 times less energy, George said.
