Petrol Prices Pumped Up As GBP 4 Gallon is Here

PETROL prices now average more than GBP 4 a gallon for the first time, the AA Motoring Trust said yesterday.
The price of unleaded fuel hit 88.1p a litre on Monday, compared with 85.5 in mid-June and 79.6p in January.
The trust, which compiled the figures from thousands of filling stations across the UK, said drivers are now paying an average of GBP 96.76 a month for petrol, compared with GBP 87.43 at the beginning of the year.
In two-car households, this means an extra monthly cost of GBP 18.66.
The trust said diesel now averaged GBP 4.19 a gallon, or 92.2p a litre. This compares with 84.8p in January.
However, the trust said motorists would be watching anxiously to see whether this week's cut in crude oil prices would filter through to filling stations.
Ruth Bridger, a spokeswoman, said: "With summer holidays imminent and many drivers considering long road trips to UK holiday destinations, many are holding their breath that the recent drop in the price of oil will translate quickly into lower prices at the pump.
"The 8.5p per litre difference between January and current July prices means that UK motorists are now spending an extra GBP 6.21 million extra on petrol per day."
Drivers in central Scotland are likely to benefit from lower- than-average prices because of the proximity of the Grangemouth oil refinery.
The trust said that an average car-owning family spends more on motoring than on housing, food and leisure.
It said the cost of running a petrol car has risen by 6 per cent since last year, with diesel cars 5.3 per cent higher.
However, environmental groups have argued that the overall cost of motoring has fallen, while bus and train fares have risen ahead of inflation.
Transport 2000 said motoring costs were 11 per cent lower than 30 years ago, while fares had climbed by 68 per cent.
