A WEEE Bit of Help With Recycling

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

A NOT-SO WEEE man is lending his weight to a major event which will help Northern Ireland companies tap into business and profit opportunities from recovering and recycling waste.

The Goldin Waste exhibition and conference, which will be held later this year at Belfast's St George's Market on October 18-19, is being organised by Full Circle, the environmental business initiative run by Investment Belfast, Belfast City Council's business development company.

Helping to promote the conference is the WEEE Man, a seven-metre sculpture composed of waste electrical and electronic equipment, weighing three tonnes and representing the amount of waste a single UK resident is likely to produce in a lifetime, 90 per cent of which currently goes to landfill.

"We all know we have to take more responsibility for the creation and disposal of waste in our homes and businesses, but the fact that a new business sector can be successfully developed from the recovery and recycling of waste is exactly the kind of creative thinking we need from the private sector," said Lucy Campbell, Full Circle Project Manager.

"Initial interest in the event is very positive, particularly from national and international companies seeking distributors or franchise operators in Northern Ireland.

"We are also very keen to see local entrepreneurs with good product ideas use this opportunity to network with those doing business across the UK and Europe.

"The conference workshops will bring together people who have turned a good idea into a successful business as well as providing international speakers who will tell us what is working in other parts of the world.

"We also hope to have a few surprises along the way, and perhaps an appearance by the WEEE Man himself as he goes on a national tour."
