NASA to conduct Ares I rocket test
August 10, 2009
NASA and Alliant Techsystems Inc. say they will conduct the first full-scale, full-duration test of the new Ares I first-stage solid rocket motor.
The static firing, scheduled for 1 p.m. MDT Tuesday, Aug. 25, will take place at the company’s test facility in Promontory, Utah.
The test firing will last two minutes, with the goal of obtaining thrust, roll-control, acoustics and vibration data, NASA said.
Alliant is the prime contractor for the Ares I first stage. The Ares I rocket is designed to launch the Orion spacecraft and the next generation of NASA astronauts.
