Pacific Gas and Electric Company Urges Customers to 'Flex Your Power, Now!' As State Declares Power Watch Day
Posted on: Thursday, 14 July 2005, 09:01 CDT
SAN FRANCISCO, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The state's power grid manager has declared both Thursday and Friday, Flex Your Power Now! Power Watch Days as hot temperatures continue to blanket much of the state and Californians appear headed toward setting a new record in electricity usage. The current record for peak demand was last set on September 8, 2004 when power usage reached 45,597 megawatts. Forecasts call for electricity usage to peak at 46,182 megawatts by Thursday afternoon.
Both residential and business customers are asked to reduce usage during the peak hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Pacific Gas and Electric Company is voluntarily curtailing usage at its facilities throughout northern and central California. The utility urges its customers to take part in this call to action, and conserve electricity today.
Conservation plays a key role in helping the California ISO balance the demand for energy with the available supply. PG&E customers can help avoid further strain to the power grid and avoid power emergencies by taking four simple steps:
-- Turn off unneeded lights, computers and appliances -- Set thermostat to 78 degrees F or higher when you're home (health permitting) -- Set thermostat to 85 degrees F or off when you're away (health permitting) -- Use major appliances and equipment after 7:00 pm (off-peak)
The Flex Your Power Now! campaign was launched last summer as a way to enlist the help of California energy users in times of tight supplies. When the California ISO declares an imminent electricity shortage -- caused for example by unplanned transmission and power plant outages, wildfires, or higher than expected demand and unseasonable weather -- a warning is issued asking customers to reduce usage to help avoid power emergencies.
During Flex Your Power Now! days, customers will be asked via many channels including radio, TV, e-mails, advertising, and the Internet to take immediate action to help reduce power demand. Pacific Gas and Electric Company is committed to assisting its customers with ways to reduce usage. Practicing conservation and installing energy efficient appliances will help save energy and money.
