NASA picks a crater for lunar impacts

NASA scientists say they've selected the lunar crater that will be struck by a satellite and its spent rocket at 7:30 a.m. EDT Oct. 9.
U.S. space agency scientists said the selected crater is an optimal target for evaluating if water ice exists at the lunar south pole.
A NASA news briefing concerning the project is scheduled Friday at 7 a.m. EDT at the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., and will be broadcast live by NASA TV. The briefing will include the health of the spacecraft and mission activities, the criteria used to select the target crater and an international campaign in which professional and amateur astronomers will view the impacts of the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite and its spent Centaur rocket.
